Charles Darwin University (CDU) is the territory’s only university, providing tertiary education since the early 70’s. About the Position
First Nations Tutors provide critical academic and learning support to CDU students, helping to build confidence, capability, and student success across a diverse student cohort. Working as part of a university-wide team, Tutors deliver targeted support in areas including language, literacy, numeracy, digital capability, and academic skills, with a strong focus on early intervention and culturally safe student engagement. This includes supporting students with academic English, discipline-specific numeracy, assessment preparation, and broader learning development to improve student transition, retention, and progression outcomes.
The role involves designing and delivering scalable learning support initiatives such as workshops, online resources, instructional materials, and tailored learning activities, while collaborating with academic staff to embed learning skills within curriculum delivery. First Nations Tutors work across online and on campus environments and contribute to CDU’s commitment to supporting diverse and often nontraditional learners through inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive support services.
The position requires flexibility in working arrangements to meet operational requirements, including the ability to work outside normal hours where necessary, and ability and willingness to travel and work in regional and remote locations.
About You
To be successful, you will require:
- Sound knowledge of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) and Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
- Qualification in a relevant field such as adult education or applied linguistics or extensive experience working with English as an additional language First Nations learners; including adapting communication, scaffolding learning, and delivering culturally responsive education or extensive experience.
- Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate with professional and academic staff and students from diverse educational, language and cultural backgrounds.
- Experience and/or contemporary knowledge of the issues and trends affecting academic literacy and language services and the needs of academic staff and students.
- Demonstrated technical proficiency in software application skills
- Experience in teaching English as a second language in a classroom setting as well as teaching on campus and in remote locations.
Additional Key Selection Criteria at Level 6
- Batchelor of Education, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of Education or higher or demonstrated experience in developing academic literacies in the education and/or training sector and one of the following qualifications:
o TESOL, adult education, applied linguistics, CELTA, DELTA, qualification
o TAESS00009 Address Foundations Skills in Vocational Practice Skill Set
o TAE80113 Graduate Diploma of Adult Language, Literacy and Numeracy Practice
Appointment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory National Criminal History check and an NT Working with Children clearance
Remuneration
Appointment to this role will be at Professional Employee Level 5/6. The base salary will be in the range of $75,927 - $95,375 per annum. The total remuneration package will be in the range of $88,834 - $111,588 per annum, inclusive of 17% superannuation.
